Bent Branches of Plum Blossom

2019

Calligraphy, acrylic on canvas

Blue acrylic paint was applied on canvas as a base layer. When the base layer was almost air-dried, it was then covered by one or two layers of white and yellow acrylic paint. Before the layer on the surface was air-dried, a specially made paintbrush, several sticks and branches, were used for pushing the facial acrylic paint away to reveal the base color. The uncovered base color appears to be a poem: “the lonely posture of plum blossom is so noble that it makes hundreds of flowers look vulgar. I can no longer depict their branches thrusting up into the sky. Since ancient times, everything has always abhorred nobility. Therefore, do not be surprised that the plum blossoms are hanging upside down and leaning down.” (Xu Wei, Ming dynasty, Wang Yuanzhang Bent Branches of Plum Blossoms)
