Chu Yun: Postcard from Dongguan's Sculpture

The world exists not because it’s the best among all possibilities. Instead, because it exists, it’s the best.

Those sculptures in Dongguan[1] exist not because they boast any value (aesthetic or any other). They gain value (aesthetic or any other) because they exist.

Thus, the defining elements of those sculptures are their location, scale and function; instead of aesthetic, meaning or imagination.

Thus, as a superstructure above economic base, it can and will only take such a form.

Thus, once a reality changes along with the ground it thrives on, it is doomed to extinction, only serving as a historical specimen of an ideology without history.

About Chu Yun

Born in 1977 in Ji’an, Jiangxi province, Chu Yun currently lives in Beijing. Chu Yun’s pursuit of the “hidden” derives from his recognition of the real. In a moment of seemingly unlimited possibility for art, Chu Yun’s works seem to have returned to a basic question: the boundaries of personal life and the boundaries of art.
